Two fundamental technologies exist and they fail differently.
Compressor units use standard refrigeration. Most built-in wine coolers, larger Vinotemp, Marvel, and mid-range Wine Enthusiast units are compressor. They cool more efficiently and reach lower temperatures. Failure modes are similar to refrigerators: compressor failure, sealed system leaks, condenser fan failures, evaporator fan failures, and control board failures.
Thermoelectric units use Peltier effect solid-state cooling. Most smaller countertop wine coolers, some Wine Enthusiast models, and entry-level built-in units are thermoelectric. Cool less efficiently but have no moving parts in the cooling system itself. Failure modes: Peltier element (often not economically repairable), cooling fans, and temperature control electronics.

On compressor units: failed compressor ($500 to $1,200), refrigerant leak (variable cost, EPA 608 required), or failed condenser fan motor ($180 to $350).
On thermoelectric units: usually failed Peltier element or failed cooling fan. Peltier replacement is often not economical; fan replacement runs $150 to $280.
Dual-zone wine coolers have two independently controlled zones. When one zone fails to hold its target temperature while the other works correctly, the cause is usually a failed temperature sensor, a failed damper motor (controls airflow between zones), or a failed zone control board.
Compressor units: failing compressor mount or failing compressor. Wine coolers are inherently quieter than refrigerators so any noticeable change in noise character is diagnostic.
Thermoelectric units: failing fan bearing. Fan replacement is straightforward.
Common failure due to prolonged operation. LED strip replacement runs $80 to $200.
Door seal failures produce temperature loss and condensation. Replacement runs $180 to $350.
